How to Use the Time Conversion Calculator
Type a value into the Value field, choose the unit you are converting from in From, and choose the unit you want in To. The converted value appears instantly, with the equivalent amount in all four units shown beneath it. Use Swap to reverse the direction — for example, hours to minutes becomes minutes to hours. For converting a minute total straight into hours and decimal hours, the Minutes to Hours Calculator is purpose-built for that job.
Minutes to Hours
Formula: Hours = Minutes ÷ 60. Divide the number of minutes by 60 to get the equivalent in hours.
- 30 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.5 hours
- 90 minutes ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours
- 130 minutes ÷ 60 ≈ 2.1667 hours
- 270 minutes ÷ 60 = 4.5 hours
- 300 minutes ÷ 60 = 5 hours
- 345 minutes ÷ 60 = 5.75 hours
Decimal hours are different from hours-and-minutes notation. The decimal part is minutes ÷ 60, not the raw minutes figure. So 2.5 hours = 2 hours 30 minutes, NOT 2 hours 50 minutes. The Minutes to Hours Calculator shows both forms side by side.
Hours to Minutes
Formula: Minutes = Hours × 60. Multiply the number of hours by 60 to get the equivalent in minutes.
- 0.5 hours = 30 minutes
- 1.5 hours = 90 minutes
- 2 hours = 120 minutes
- 2.5 hours = 150 minutes
- 5 hours = 300 minutes
To add or subtract these durations from a clock time instead of converting units, use the Add Time Calculator.
Seconds to Minutes & Minutes to Seconds
Seconds to minutes: Minutes = Seconds ÷ 60. Minutes to seconds: Seconds = Minutes × 60.
- 60 seconds = 1 minute

- 120 seconds = 2 minutes
- 300 seconds = 5 minutes
Days and Hours
Hours to days: Days = Hours ÷ 24. Days to hours: Hours = Days × 24.
- 1 day = 24 hours
- 2 days = 48 hours
- 72 hours = 3 days
- 168 hours = 7 days
Hours to Seconds
Formula: hours × 3,600. Example: 2 hours = 7,200 seconds.
Time Conversion vs Decimal Hours
The Time Conversion Calculator converts between time units — seconds, minutes, hours and days. The Decimal Hours Calculator specifically converts between hours:minutes and decimal-hour notation for payroll. Use this tool to switch units; use the Decimal Hours Calculator for hours-and-minutes to decimal work.
Time Conversion vs Hours Calculator
The Time Conversion Calculator converts one unit of time into another. The Hours Calculator adds, subtracts and totals duration values. Use this tool to convert a single value; use the Hours Calculator to do arithmetic on durations you already have. To find how long something took between two clock times, the Time Duration Calculator is the right tool.
Common Time Conversion Mistakes
- Treating 1 hour as 100 minutes. An hour is 60 minutes, so 1.5 hours is 90 minutes, not 150.
- Treating 30 minutes as 0.30 hours. 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, so 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, not 0.30 hours.
- Reading 2.5 hours as 2 hours 50 minutes. The decimal part is minutes ÷ 60, so 2.5 hours is 2 hours 30 minutes.
- Forgetting 1 hour = 3,600 seconds. 2 hours is 7,200 seconds, not 7,200 ÷ 60.
- Forgetting 1 day = 24 hours. 48 hours is 2 days; 72 hours is 3 days.
- Rounding too early. Convert first, then round for display. Rounding mid-step can drift the final figure.
