How to Use the Hours Calculator
The Hours Calculator has three modes. Add hours sums several hours-and-minutes durations together. Subtract hours takes one duration away from another. Total hours adds up a list of H:MM values such as 8:30, 7:45 and 8:00. Every mode updates instantly and shows the result as hours:minutes, total minutes and decimal hours.
How to Add Hours and Minutes
To add durations, line them up and add the hours and the minutes separately, then carry any minutes of 60 or more into the hours column. For example, 2h 45m + 1h 30m: the hours give 2 + 1 = 3h, and the minutes give 45 + 30 = 75m. Since 75 minutes is more than 60, carry one hour and keep 15 minutes, giving 3h + 1h + 15m = 4h 15m. The calculator does this carrying for you automatically.
How to Subtract Hours and Minutes
To subtract, take the minutes of Duration B away from the minutes of Duration A, and the hours of B away from the hours of A. If the minutes of A are smaller than the minutes of B, borrow 1 hour (60 minutes) from A's hours first. For example, 8h 30m − 2h 45m: 30m is less than 45m, so borrow 1 hour to make it 7h 90m, then 90m − 45m = 45m and 7h − 2h = 5h, giving 5h 45m. If B is larger than A overall the calculator shows a clear message rather than a negative duration.
How to Total Multiple Hours
Switch to Total hours and enter each duration in H:MM form, one per row. For example, 8:30 + 7:45 + 8:00 adds to 24h 15m, or 24.25 decimal hours. Blank rows are ignored, so you can paste a whole column of values from a spreadsheet and only the filled rows count. Totals above 24 hours are shown in full, because these are durations rather than clock times.
Converting Hours and Minutes to Decimal Hours
Decimal hours are total minutes divided by 60. So 7h 15m = 435 minutes ÷ 60 = 7.25, 7h 30m = 450 ÷ 60 = 7.50, and 7h 45m = 465 ÷ 60 = 7.75. The decimal figure is shown alongside every total here. A dedicated Decimal Hours Calculator is planned for more in-depth conversion work; until it is live, this calculator covers the common cases.
Hours Calculator vs Time Duration Calculator
The Hours Calculator performs arithmetic on durations — adding, subtracting and totalling lengths of time such as 2h 45m. The Time Duration Calculator calculates the elapsed time between two clock times, such as 09:15 to 17:45. Use the Hours Calculator when you already have durations; use the Time Duration Calculator when you have a start and end time.
Hours Calculator vs Work Hours Calculator
The Work Hours Calculator focuses on working time from start and end times with unpaid breaks. The Hours Calculator simply adds, subtracts and totals duration values you already have, with no clock times or breaks involved.
Common Hours Calculation Mistakes
- Treating 60 minutes as 100. 7h 30m is 7.50 decimal hours, not 7.30. Minutes are sixtieths of an hour, not hundredths.
- Using 7.30 for 7h 30m. 7.30 means 7 hours and 30 hundredths — only 18 minutes. The correct decimal is 7.50.
- Forgetting to carry minutes. 2h 45m + 1h 30m is not 3h 75m; the 75 minutes carry to 4h 15m.
- Incorrect borrowing when subtracting. If the minutes run negative, borrow 1 hour (60 minutes) from the hours column before subtracting.
- Mixing clock times with durations. 14:30 is a moment on the clock; 2h 30m is a length of time. This calculator works with durations only.
FAQs
- How do I add hours and minutes?
- Enter each duration as a separate row with an hours field and a minutes field, then read the total. Minutes of 60 or more are carried into hours automatically, so 2h 75m becomes 3h 15m. This calculator shows the total as hours:minutes, total minutes and decimal hours.
- How do I subtract hours and minutes?
- Use the Subtract mode. Enter Duration A and Duration B as hours and minutes; the calculator works out A minus B. If B is larger than A it shows a clear message instead of a negative duration, because a negative length of time is not meaningful here.
- How do I total several hours?
- Use the Total mode and paste or type a list of durations in H:MM form (for example 8:30, 7:45, 8:00). Blank lines are ignored and the calculator adds the rest together into a single total.
- What is 2 hours 45 minutes plus 1 hour 30 minutes?
- 2h 45m + 1h 30m = 4h 15m, which is 255 total minutes or 4.25 decimal hours. The minutes add to 75, which carries as one extra hour plus 15 minutes.
- How do I convert minutes into hours?
- Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.50 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. Add that fraction to the whole hours to get decimal hours.
- Is 30 minutes 0.5 hours?
- Yes. 30 ÷ 60 = 0.50, so 30 minutes is 0.5 decimal hours. 7 hours 30 minutes is therefore 7.50 decimal hours, not 7.30.
- Is 7 hours 30 minutes 7.5 hours?
- Yes. 7h 30m = 7 + 30/60 = 7.50 decimal hours. Writing 7.30 is a common mistake — that would mean 7 hours and 30 hundredths of an hour, which is only 18 minutes.
- How many minutes are in 8 hours?
- 8 hours is 8 × 60 = 480 minutes. In general, multiply the hours by 60 to convert to minutes.
- Can I add more than 24 hours?
- Yes. Durations are not clock times, so the total can run past 24 hours. For example, three 9-hour shifts total 27 hours. The calculator shows the full total without wrapping.
- What is the difference between clock time and a duration?
- A clock time is a moment on the 24-hour clock (such as 14:30). A duration is a length of time (such as 2 hours 30 minutes). This Hours Calculator works with durations only; for the elapsed time between two clock times use the Time Duration Calculator.
