Days Between Dates Calculator

Count the number of days, weeks and calendar time between two dates. Enter a start date and an end date, choose whether to include the end date, and read the day count, weeks breakdown, hours, minutes and a calendar difference of years, months and days. Everything updates instantly and runs in your browser.

Days between dates

Enter both a start date and an end date to see the result.

Example: January 1, 2026 → January 31, 2026 = 30 days = 4 weeks, 2 days = 720 hours.

How to Use the Days Between Dates Calculator

  1. Enter the Start date.
  2. Enter the End date.
  3. Choose whether to include the end date in the count.
  4. Read the day count, weeks breakdown, hours, minutes and calendar difference.

How to Calculate Days Between Two Dates

The standard calculation measures elapsed calendar days between the two dates — that is, how many whole days pass from the start date to the end date, not counting the end date itself. For example, January 1 to January 31 is 30 days, because 30 days elapse between them. The calculator uses real month lengths and leap years, so February is counted correctly in both leap and non-leap years.

Should You Include the End Date?

By default the calculator does not include the end date, so January 1 to January 2 is 1 day — one elapsed day. If you want to count both calendar dates instead, tick Include end date. With that box ticked, January 1 to January 2 becomes 2 calendar days, and a single date counted against itself becomes 1 day. The checkbox lets you choose whichever convention your task needs, and the result clearly states whether the end date is included.

Days Between Dates Example

From March 1 to March 15 is 14 elapsed days, which is exactly 2 weeks. If you tick Include end date, the count becomes 15 calendar days, because both March 1 and March 15 are counted. The calculator shows the same span as total days, weeks plus remaining days, total weeks, hours and minutes so you can pick the unit that suits your task.

How Leap Years Affect Date Calculations

A leap year contains an extra day, February 29, so the year has 366 days instead of 365. This changes date differences around the end of February. February 28 to March 1 in 2024 (a leap year) is 2 days, because February 29 falls in between. The same dates in 2025 (a non-leap year) is only 1 day. The calculator handles this automatically because it works with real calendar dates rather than assuming a fixed month length.

Days vs Calendar Difference

Total days measures elapsed days as a single number. Calendar difference expresses the same span using years, months and days, respecting actual month lengths and leap years. For example, a result may be 430 total days while its calendar representation is 1 year, 2 months, 4 days, depending on the exact start and end dates. The calculator shows both so you can read the span whichever way is more useful.

Days Between Dates vs Business Days

Days Between Dates counts normal calendar days, including weekends. A Business Days Calculator is intended for working-day calculations that exclude weekends and selected non-working days. That tool is still coming soon on TimeCalcLab, so for now use this calculator for total calendar days. For elapsed time between two clock times rather than calendar dates, use the Time Duration Calculator.

Common Date Calculation Mistakes

  • Accidentally counting both dates. January 1 to January 2 is 1 elapsed day, not 2 — unless you deliberately include the end date.
  • Forgetting leap years. February 28 to March 1 is 2 days in 2024 but 1 day in 2025.
  • Assuming every month has 30 days. Real months range from 28 to 31 days, so a 30-day assumption drifts over long ranges.
  • Using clock-time arithmetic for calendar dates. Daylight saving can shift a timestamp by an hour and throw off a naive day count.
  • Timezone and DST errors. This calculator treats the inputs as calendar dates and counts in UTC, so DST never changes a whole-day result.
  • Confusing calendar days with business days. Calendar days include weekends; business days exclude them.

FAQs

How do I calculate the number of days between two dates?
Enter a start date and an end date. The calculator counts the whole calendar days between them using real month lengths and leap years, so the result is never affected by daylight saving or timezones. By default the end date itself is not counted; tick "Include end date" to count both endpoints.
How many days are there between January 1 and January 31?
There are 30 days between January 1 and January 31 using the standard elapsed-day count (the end date is not included). That is also 4 weeks and 2 days, or about 4.29 weeks. If you tick "Include end date" the count becomes 31 calendar days.
Does the calculator include the end date?
No, not by default. The standard result counts elapsed calendar days between the two dates, so January 1 to January 2 is 1 day. Tick the "Include end date" box to count both the start and end dates, which makes January 1 to January 2 count as 2 days and the same date count as 1 day.
How do I count both the start and end date?
Tick the "Include end date" box. This adds one calendar day to the standard elapsed count, so both endpoints are counted. For example, March 1 to March 15 with the box ticked is 15 calendar days, instead of the standard 14 elapsed days.
How are leap years handled?
The calculator uses real calendar dates, so February has 29 days in a leap year and 28 otherwise. February 28 to March 1 in 2024 (a leap year) is 2 days, while the same dates in 2025 is 1 day. February 29, 2024 to February 28, 2025 is 365 days.
How many days are in a leap year?
A leap year has 366 days, because February has 29 days instead of 28. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years which must be divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not.
How many days are in a normal year?
A normal (non-leap) year has 365 days, with February having 28 days. The seven months with 31 days are January, March, May, July, August, October and December; the four months with 30 days are April, June, September and November.
Can I calculate dates across different years?
Yes. The calculator works across year boundaries and multi-year spans. December 31, 2025 to January 1, 2026 is 1 day, and longer ranges are broken down into total days, weeks, hours, minutes and a calendar difference of years, months and days.
What happens if the end date is before the start date?
The calculator still works out the difference cleanly and shows the absolute number of days, with a note that the end date is before the start date. No negative or broken output is shown — the dates are simply treated in chronological order.
What is the difference between calendar days and business days?
Calendar days count every day of the week including weekends. Business days count only working days, excluding weekends and selected non-working days. This Days Between Dates Calculator counts calendar days; a separate Business Days Calculator is planned for working-day counts.
How do I calculate weeks between two dates?
Divide the number of days by 7. The calculator shows the result as whole weeks plus a remaining number of days, and as a decimal total of weeks. For example, 30 days is 4 weeks and 2 days, or 4.29 total weeks.
